There are two important scales to evaluate language proficiency, the first one is mostly used in the US, the second one mostly in Europe:
The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale has five proficiency levels (novice, intermediate, advanced, superior and distinguished). The first three levels are each split into low, medium and high sub-levels.
The Common European Framework of References (CEFR) has six levels: A1 and A2 (Basic level), B1 and B2 (Independent level), C1 and C2 (Proficient level).
Both levels are based on can-do statements (ACTFL | CEFR), statements that describe what a language learner can do with language on each level in terms of speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
In the US, Spanish is the most studied language at all levels of education.
In the United Kingdom, Spanish is perceived as the most important language for the future.
In the European Union, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany (in this order) are the countries with the highest number of Spanish students.
Spanish is the second language of international communication, with more than 500 million speakers around the world, only behind English.
Spanish is the second language with the largest number of native speakers on four continents.
Around 20 million people decide to learn Spanish every year and demand has doubled in recent times.
Spanish allows you to travel through more than 20 Spanish-speaking countries and discover the richness of their cinema, their literature, their music, their architecture and the immense variety of their gastronomy.
According to the British Council report "Languages for the future", Spanish is the most necessary foreign language in all areas.
Of the G-20, the group of 20 industrialized and emerging countries, 4 of them speak Spanish, making our common language an essential tool in the business world.
Spanish is the second most used language on the Internet, on social networks and on the official portals of international organizations, only behind English.
Spain is the country in Europe with the greatest biological diversity, the second country in the world with the most sites declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the third country on the planet that receives the most foreign visitors.
